Programs
♦Literacy Programs of New Jersey provides programs that meet the needs of both ESL and basic literacy adults and their families through the following programs:

Basic Literacy (BL)
provides free and confidential one-to-one tutoring for adults whose native language is English and who need to acquire life skills and basic literacy in reading and writing English.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL literacy program helps adult community members whose primary language is not English understand, speak, read and write English for everyday use.

Family Literacy Programs
LPNJ believes that family literacy is a delivery system, rather than a definitive "program" and integrates the four components of adult education, childhood education, parent education and support, and parent/child interaction.  Within LPNJ's idea of family literacy there is a collaborative effort on the part of the pre-schools, LPNJ staff, and the community, such as our library partners.  The primary goals of these programs are:

♦  to help parents become economically self-sufficient
♦  to improve basic literacy skills of parents and/or caregivers
♦  to increase parents' involvement in their children's education
♦  to enhance children's development, school readiness and school success
♦  to enhance parenting skills
♦  to enhance parent and child relationships
Parent Literacy
The goals of the Parent Literacy Program focus primarily on the adult family members.  An integrated literacy curriculum is developed in which adult learners use authentic reading and literacy materials to become more effective parents and teachers of their children.  Through English language learning, parents learn to also become more effective in dealing with life's problems.  The curriculum focuses on issues that are relevant to both adults and children.  Through English language learning, parents learn to also become more effective in dealing with life's problems.  The curriculum focuses on issues that are relevant to both adults and children and allow the adults to use their knowledge of a particular subject area and learn English at the same time.

Conversation Groups
Provide non-native speakers of English the opportunity to improve their knowledge of United States culture and language through discussion and dialogue.

Literacy Skill Groups
Provide adult students with more intensive and concentrated English language and grammar.
