THE NUMBERS ARE IN!
Our 2009 fiscal year ended on June 30th and our learner numbers are complete.
It costs LPNJ approximately $250 a year to work with one adult learner for 28 weeks.
FY '08 ( July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008) we supported - 320 adult learners = $80,000
FY'09 (July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009) we supported - 793 adult learners = $198,250
We are closing this fiscal year with approximately a $35,000 deficit.

Did you know that ...
According to a report of the New Jersey Association for Lifelong Learning (NJALL-May 2007) "...as New Jersey has a few successful family literacy programs, they have not become a part of the mainstream of adult literacy. New Jersey needs to develop a comprehensive master plan for the delivery of vital adult literacy services that includes specific strategies for implementing a family Literacy Program statewide."
Literacy Programs of New Jersey views family literacy as the way parents, caregivers, children and extended family members use literacy at home and in their community.
Mission Statement
The mission of Literacy Programs of New Jersey (LPNJ) is to enable adult, native speakers of English, and those whose native language is not English, to acquire the necessary basic skills in reading, speaking, and writing English, thereby empowering them to participate more fully in the daily tasks of family, school, job and community.

Strategic Direction
Literacy Programs of New Jersey will meet the literacy needs of the adult population by providing:
♦ Free, individually-tailored programs with positive, measurable outcomes
♦ Quality, cost-effective small group programs
♦ Leadership on literacy issues
♦ Program-driven workshops for the literacy community
♦ Heightened responsiveness to literacy issues/needs among policy makers, funders, the media, business and others.
Literacy Programs of New Jersey will serve as the comprehensive resource for literacy by:
♦ Providing direct services to individuals
♦ Providing referrals, as necessary
♦ Placing special emphasis on serving the literacy mission of the libraries and enhancing the value of the
yearly assessment
